Behind the Advice Column (Sitcom Advice)

Sitcom Advice is a series that Those Stories publishes where four sitcom characters give advice on a wide range of topics. The sitcom characters are never experts in the subject, but how often are the people giving advice really experts anyway? The four live in one house together and spend their time acting out sitcom scenarios.

Jay is the patriarch of the group. He is skeptical of the entire endeavor of the sitcom in general and spends his time pointing out the flaws in his three friends’ schemes and lives. Jay is relatively easy going, but sometimes feels the weight of being in charge of this group. Jay gets first billing because he has to hold the group together. Loose ends get tied up by Jay, and he is also in charge of hounding his friends for their advice when they fail to complete an assignment. Jay certainly thinks of himself as the cool one.

Eliza is the matriarch of the show. She is quick-witted, daring and gets the last laugh. She is always concerned about figuring out what is fair and making sure that she gets screentime in a show dominated by men (a problem in sitcoms). Eliza is the person you don’t want to doubt or double-cross because it will always come back to haunt you. Eliza spends a lot of time trying to keep her three housemates alive.

Gene thinks he’s a genius, but in the sitcom, he is the clown. His actions lead to high hilarity, and no one takes him seriously. He always feels like people are underestimating him, laughing at him and pulling one over on him. Like Daffy Duck, his first instinct is to take everyone down and then deal with the consequences. Gene has been fired from many jobs, lost a lot of bets and thrown things that have come back and hit him in the face. If anyone ends up in a dumb costume, it’s Gene.

Kenny is the professor of the group. I don’t know how many professors you’ve met, but they often have trouble performing simple tasks, like going to the grocery store or putting their shirt on the right way. However, deep within the chaos that Kenny creates, moments of wisdom bubble to the top. He understands things with the detached perspective of someone who sees the world as a place he’s been, but not a place he lives. What makes him a professor? We’re still investigating.
