Dealing with One Kind of Troll

“We have called this meeting to discuss our problem with people trolling our company online,” Bryce said to those assembled for the company’s strategy meeting. “Miles has come up with a strategy. Go ahead, Miles.”

“So the thing with trolls is that you need to try to get them on your side. While they can seem less than human, they have feelings too. So you need to meet them where they are.”

“You want us to befriend the people saying horrible things about our employees, our families and our products?” Bryce asked.

“It’s true that trolls can be mean, but they have wants too. And we can use that to our advantage.”

“What do we have in common with trolls?” Bryce asked.

“Bridge safety,” Miles said. “We care about bridges not collapsing while we have cars on them or under them. Trolls live under bridges, so they want safe bridges too.”

The room stayed silent, so Mile continued. His pitch must be going well.

“Bridge safety legislation is easy to get behind, and if we come out as pro-bridge, it should help us befriend trolls.”

“Are you trolling us?” Bryce asked.

“No, I live in a condo,” Miles said.
