Overheard: Bouncer Blues

A phone conversation overheard while waiting for a train after midnight. The person speaking was a man in his mid-forties, wearing glasses. He wore all black. He kept running his hand through his hair.

“Listen, Mom, I got fired because I cared too much about my job. I was doing my job. The alcohol control rules are very tight. We’re told that we don’t let anyone in who is already intoxicated. Tonight, that was basically everyone who got to the front door.

How would I know if they’re drunk, Mom? I don’t know if they were drunk, but they were at least tipsy. By definition, that means they are intoxicated. I had to do my job.”

Well, no one got into the bar. So they fired me. They said they couldn’t pay for a bouncer if they had no customers.”
