What’s the Point of Youth Soccer?

The soccer coach stood before a group of kids’ parents as they decided whether it was time they started competing in tournaments. Were they ready to travel every weekend to play more games? The kids were nine, after all.

“Now, I want you all to answer the question: what’s the point of your children playing soccer?”

The parents rattled off answers:

“Build character.”

“Compete at a high level.”

“Learn what it means to be a good teammate!”

“Understand how much work winning takes.”

The coach nodded along. “I decided to ask your kids the same questions. None of your answers matched. Please excuse this poor Steve Harvey impression.

“Top four answers on the board… Number four, having fun!

“Number three, getting outside!

“Number two, scoring a goal!

“And the number one answer… drumroll please… orange slices.”
