Sitcom Advice: Skip This One

Hello, I follow everything the Sitcom Advice Crew does, starting with this column. I never miss a post. I’m a completionist in all aspects of my life. I listen to three-hour podcasts multiple times a week. I try to watch every single show they put on Netflix. When I get a bottle of shampoo, I stick with it until I’m just washing my hair with microplastics. My friends think this is unhealthy. So I agreed to write in for some advice. What do you think? Am I too worried about keeping up on things?

—Six Seasons AND a Movie

Jay: You’re trying to read every advice column? Gene is too unhinged to subject yourself to that (see below). This is supposed to be a fun way to pass a few minutes before your day starts or while you’re waiting for an Uber. It’s entertainment. There’s no prize. I love a fan who says they’ve seen my work just as much as a fan who says they’ve seen all my work. Because some of my work is bad. Thanks for reading, but don’t sweat it.

Eliza: Do you enjoy staying on top of everything? If you get satisfaction from knowing you have reached 100% completion, then go for it. Entertainment, shampoo and even exercise are about what makes you feel good. Sometimes, just showing up at the gym is perfect for me—I do a few weights, and then I hit the sauna. Other days, I want to tear through a spin class to really prove myself. Trust yourself!

Gene: Of course, you need to complete everything. No one is impressed by someone who has only climbed 90% of Mt. Everest. There’s no value in just watching the first three seasons of Grey’s Anatomy. You need to dig in. Watching everything on Netflix—they say it can’t be done, but I truly believe in you! You can be one of the greats with your binge-worthy habits.

Kenny: I hate that my advice always comes last, but here it is. I think you should just skip this one. Go up for air. Breathe a little bit. Lie in the sun. You can come back for the next one.
